Neil Munro
Neil is an Edinburgh-based guitarist, teacher and composer; he teaches in the music department of a prominent Edinburgh school, and when not teaching and giving an occasional performance, spends a lot of his time writing music.
While a younger man he pursued an active career as a guitarist, performing in a variety of settings in both the classical and jazz fields. He has played, recorded and broadcast with a wide range of musicians such as the RSNO, Digby Fairweather, Benny Waters, Jim Douglas, Aly Bain, Dick Lee, Janusz Carmello and a host of others.
As a teacher, he has taught literally thousands of people how to play the guitar; many of his pupils are now themselves enjoying successful careers in the music profession as performers and teachers.
Composition started to take a greater part of his time following a back injury which severely curtailed his performing activities. His compositions include a suite for soprano saxophone and piano, a solo guitar piece, a four movement orchestral suite and a wind quartet – his music has received many performances in many countries; the saxophone/piano piece has been recorded by Richard Ingham and Mary McArthy on the Foxglove label.
He has also written many educational works – numerous guitar studies, a piece for school orchestra, ensemble music for flute groups and several big band pieces.
His current projects include a saxophone quartet and a series of jazz studies.
